The Mom Who St-"ART"-ed it All

$

For more than 40 years, Papemelroti has been crafting and churning out new designs every month, resulting to over 25,000 products.

Where did all this artsy crafting begin?

The Papemelroti siblings - "Pa" for Patsy, "Pe" for Peggy, "Mel" for Meldy, "Ro" for Robert and "Ti" for Tina (in order of appearance) have Mommy Socorro "Corit" Alviola Alejandro as their innovator mom, the founder of Papemelroti.  Proud husband Benny always praises Mommy Corit for her keen business sense.

We asked Corit, what age did you start sewing?
In my 20s or even earlier.  I was sewing my own dresses then went into stuffed toys.  I got my own sewing machine when I got married.  My husband gave it to me.  I just learned by myself, looking at patterns then eventually, I made my own pattern.

Note: Corit would use the scrap cloth from sewing dresses as her cloth pieces for the stuffed toys.  She would also make the children toys made out of empty clorox bottles.

Why crafts?
I used to make things for the family Christmas tree and toys for the children.  Then I was interested in having a business as well.

A sneak peek into her workroom.

Today at 79, Corit still loves to make products.  Specifically, she handcrafts dried flower arrangements and miniature shadowboxes in the shop. When she works with her hands, she forgets about all her worries.

But we know that with her motto "Yard by yard, life is hard.  Inch by inch, it's a cinch!" and faith firm in God, hardworking Corit doesn't have much to worry about.

Make a Recycled Pen Holder in 5 Minutes

$

0

School is here!  Forgot to get a pencil case?  The old one is just passe?  Want to make one yourself?  Here's the perfect project to make in just 5 minutes.

Gather all your materials first (don't count the 5 minutes yet okay?)

2 small sized plastic water bottles (drink the water first!)
sharp cutter (be careful!)
sharp scissors (be careful too!)
lighter (be triply careful with this)
ribbon or washi tape
glue gun (optional)

1. Cut the plastic bottle in middle portion (or nearer the lid).  It depends on you if you want it the longest possible length - the nearer the lid your cut, the longer your pen case can be.

Cut the edges as the straight as you can.
Use the lighter to go over (quickly!) the edges for these to lose their sharpness.  Do this in a well ventilated area.  Be careful with this step as the plastic will curl if too hot.

2. Cut the other plastic bottle in the same way.

3. We need one bottle end slightly smaller then the other so we can insert it inside to form the pencil case.  To do this, cut the rim of the bottle about 1/4 inch high notches (like the image below) and then curl it a bit inward so it becomes "smaller" in circumference.

4.  Secure with ribbon or washi tape.

Now you can use the pencil case.  But wait, you can "girlify" it by glue gunning some embellishments!

Remember the water bottle bottom?  It kind of looks like a flower doesn't it?

You can glue gun it to the bigger bottle end to make it ever so cute!

You can also use this as a flower holder when you're tired of using it as a pencil case.

Here's a close up view

Enjoy!

Recycling Paper and the Best Paper to Use

$
0
0

Through the years, Papemelroti products have long been associated with brown paper.  But of late, one can see a bit of brightness on our notebooks.  See some of the examples below.
These beautiful full color ring journals are designed by award-winning graphic designer Robert Alejandro.  They can be used for notes, as a diary or journal or small memorabilia scrapbook.  Cover and inside pages are made of 100% recycled paper.  The full color cover sheet is made from imported recycled paper.

So why brown?  Why white?  Why bother recycling at all?

According to Conservatree USA, it takes an average of 24 trees to produce 1 ton of paper.

Cutting down a mature leafy tree produces reduces the oxygen in a season needed by 10 people in a year.  Consequently, that's less oxygen produced for 240 people just to produce a ton of paper.

A non-existent tree will not be able to absorb 48 lb. of carbon dioxide a year and that will be 1152 lb. for 24 trees.

Using a ton of recycled paper saves you reduces the energy by the following percentages:
Wood 100%
Total Energy Consumption 27%
Waste Water 33%
Air Particulate Emissions 28%
Solid Waste 54%

I think it's safe to say...

Not enough trees = Not enough forests = Not enough Oxygen = Reduced Quality of Life

Are we aware that in our world today, forests are disappearing at the rate of 20 football fields per second, due to paper and pulp production?  It's a grim piece of information but our daily paper choices can make a significant impact.

It's truly important thing for us to consider in choosing the type of paper we write on.  The implications are even more for urgent for companies and schools who use paper in bulk.

How do you know which paper used is best?

Look for the following paper characteristics:

100% Recycled Paper - Unbleached is better as no harmful chemicals were released to the environment. These result in differing shades of beige to dark brown.  The chlorine bleaching process is needed to make white recycled paper.

Lighter paper as opposed to heavy paper

Unscented paper

Paper made from hemp, kenaf, bagasse, wheatstraw, rice straw etc.

Paper produced from an ecologically managed eucalypt or pine plantation source.

Avoid:

Virgin Tree-Fiber
Paper from GMO Trees

How many trees do you think you saved this year?

My sister's birthday is coming up
and I was thinking I'd like to write her
an "honoring" and place it in a nice container.
An "honoring" is the opposite of a roast.
It's when you tell someone you appreciate them,
and honor them for the wonderful qualities they have!

So here's an idea using recycled materials.
I've always wondered what
I could use these aluminum tubes for-
I've got a lot from all the Vitamin C I take!

Gather your materials-
one of those metal or plastic tubes,
a used wooden or plastic spoon (cleaned of course!)
picture of the friend you want to honor,
book paper and embellishments,

It is better if the photo faces front and fits the spoon.
Cut up the photo and glue on to the wooden spoon.
Cut up book paper to cover the tube.

Glue on the book paper and smoothen out.
Cut out a circle from bookpaper or cardstock
to glue on to the cover of the tube.

Shorten the spoon so that it fits the tube
and won't extend beyond it.
Cut out paper for her hair and for her dress.
Glue on.
Use a glue gun to attach the spoon body to the tube.

If you are like me, you probably have
a box full of embellishments.
This is the part I like best!
Decorate your project with flowers, buttons,
lace, or die cuts, etc.
It really depends on what you have on hand.

And what do you do with this?
Before giving it to your friend or loved one,
cut up strips of nice paper
and write down what you admire about her.
Or you can cut a long piece of paper and roll it up
and place it inside the tube.
Be sure to write a lovely letter that your friend
or loved one will want to keep!

7 Ways to Be Happier

"I know that there is nothing better for people than to be happy and to do good while they live." - Ecclesiastes 3:12

To many, life is like a constantly spinning wheel.  Sometimes you're up and sometimes you're down.  But do you know someone whose wheel seems to always be up there?  A genuinely, constantly, happy person?

We may think that we don't have much control over what happens in our day and thus, we don't know if happiness will come along our way or not.  But some people seem to know the secret to everlasting happiness.  The good thing is that they don't have a monopoly on it.  We can all be happy, regardless of what life may bring.

1. Don't wait to be happy.
"As soon as I get a million in my bank account, I'll be free to do whatever I please and be really happy."
"As soon as the man of my dreams come into my life, I'll be happy."
"As soon as my children finish school, then I can rest and be happy."

You'll hear these words every day from people who are waiting to be happy.  Happiness is something you can choose to have right now.  Life was not designed to be perfect. The challenges we face daily can either be stepping stones or stumbling blocks depending on how we look at them.

2. Love yourself
Happy people love and accept themselves.  God made us each so uniquely and beautifully.  Without an ounce of vanity, be thankful for who God made you to be!

"I praise You Lord because I am fearfully and wonderfully made.  All Your works are wonderful.  I know that full well... How amazing are Your thoughts concerning me!" - Psalm 139

3. Deny yourself that extra serving of rice!  TV commercials and billboards encourage us to indulge in the things that make us happier... more often.  A recently conducted study contradicts that.  It showed that the higher amount of self-control one had, the more satisfaction they had in their lives, even on a short term basis.

4. On the go  Studies reveal that happy people have not stopped moving forward.  They keep learning, seeking, growing.  Many of them are creative and have an outlet to express themselves in various forms of self expression.

5. Connect.
Happy people have a network of deeply committed relationships. They have people they can go to when they need support.  They are friendly, interested in others' welfare and they spend a lot of quality time building their relationships with others.  Happiness is often contagious so you'll find that happy people come from happy families and friends.  We hope to be the kind of people who infect others with joy.

6. Soul + Spirit
In today's society, everyone puts a premium on looks and physical attributes, while oftentimes neglecting the soul.  Since our bodies will fade and our souls won't, doesn't it make sense to prioritize the wellbeing of our souls?  Studies show the people who are deeply spiritual and have a community where they can express their faith are twice as happy as people who don't.

7. Examine your thoughts.
In a single day, an average of 30,000 thoughts cross a person's mind.  This may come as a surprise but the quality of a person's joy is dependent on what those thoughts contain.

The study of the brain over the years has revealed that 87% to 95% of ailments are caused by the repetitive negative thoughts that people allow themselves to think each day.

When the thoughts are good, the neurons or nerve cells up in our head undergo a process and they look like trees but when we harbor anger and unforgiveness, these look like thorns and ultimately, when we keep thinking thoughts like this, the thorns hurt us.  In a nutshell, our brains were not built to handle toxic thoughts and emotions for prolonged periods of time without detrimental effects to our health (and our happiness).

So be conscious of what you are thinking.  If you are prone to grumbling and anger, decide to be thankful and look for a blessing (which is all around) to think of instead.  Make up your mind beforehand of things that make you happy inside and replace toxic thoughts with these whenever they spring up.

"We were made for fullness of life." - John 10:10

Happiness Gift Box

$

A couple of days ago,
someone from a pharmaceutical company
emailed and asked if we could
come up with a livelihood project
making use of these Ceelin Plus boxes.

We cut out the pages of
an old book that nobody wants to read again.

Then we cut off the tabs on the top
of the box.
After we scored the narrower sides of the box
in the middle vertically,
we folded it like an accordion.

Then we made a cover for the bottom
of the box by tracing it
and cutting tabs on the corners.

We used white glue to cover the bottom.

We made a cover for the sides of the box,
making sure to leave a bit of bookpaper
at the top to fold over.

Then we put notches on the extra bookpaper to
make it easy to fold over and glue neatly.

We used a single hole puncher to make holes
on the two unfolded sides.

The best part- embellishing!
We decorated the box with
a papemelroti die cut and some red ribbons,
but you can have fun with buttons, lace,
stickers, tags, paint, rubber stamps, etc!

This makes a nice gift box for small things
like jewelry, make up, perfume,
a hanky, candies or a small figurine.
I am sure that your gift
will make someone special
very happy!

Strong Soul Food

$

Have you had your share of soul food for today?

Here are some bite size sayings that talk about STRENGTH, not physical, but spiritual strength.  May they feed and fill your soul today.

Sometimes we focus too much on what we see.  Is our hair alright?  Is our teeth all white?
But we should know where to start... how's the strength of our heart?

Do we shy away from people or things that test our strength?  Do we ever venture out of our comfort zones?  Stepping outside our little worlds can open up a whole new world of possibilities.  How about a little adventure?

Life has its own share of storms.  Are you in one now?
We keep on trying to go higher, farther and taller when all we need is to look down and see how stronger and deeper our roots are.

Is something telling you you can't do it?   Believe you can, because it's true.

Strength, faith and courage are all within reach.  Look to the Source.

Have a strong soul day!

Craftstory: Cork Critters

$

Craft projects, as we all know, take time and talent to accomplish.

Some people have the impression that making crafts necessitates a big budget to make the outcome more attractive.  Some think that one needs a lot of practice just to make something that of value.  Others think that you must have a lot of passion or a cause to create the "heart"-work.

One young hobbyist didn't need to spend a lot to make her projects.  She just grabbed what was available at their home to make her critters.

The young crafter Yanna's family would regularly have thanksgiving prayers at their home and one of the symbols of celebration is a bottle of wine which the whole family would share.  Seeing all the cork from the bottle, Yanna had an idea to make some Cork Critters.

For safety, Yanna's mom would help her cut the cork but everything else was Yanna's design.

See a smiling Ant.

Meet her first creation, a cute Kitty.

Let your imagination ride away with the Horse.

Here's Yanna's delightful duck with pistachio nut shells for feathers.

Here is 8-year-old Yanna posing with her Cork Critters.

Here is Yanna with her growing collection of Cork Critters.  She never ceases to amaze her friends and family with her ideas!

"...the work of their hands brings them reward."
- Proverbs 12:14

*We love inspiring you with creative crafters like Yanna so you too can start working on a masterpiece all your own.  If you have a craft idea or project you wish to share with our readers and e-mail subscribers, you may e-mail us at info[at]papemelroti[dot]com.

Celebration Clock

$

0

We are celebrating 46 years in business!
This is the newsletter I made on our
ancient typewriter in October 13, 1967.
I was quite excited about this family adventure

It is amazing to me how fast time flies.
It doesn't drag its feet, it flies!

I was wondering about a project for our anniversary feature,
and when I saw this clock that I got for free from a drugstore,
I thought I would try changing the face.
I removed the glass in front by
taking out all the screws at the back.

Next, I pulled out the center nob
to take out the hands of the clock.

Then I traced the shape of the clock.

After tracing, I cut it out, including the
little round hole in the middle.

Now I have the shape,
I drew a design on it.

Then I traced the design on to
one of my prepared backgrounds.

You can see the traced design below.

Here is the almost finished painting.

As a finishing touch, I wrote
"Nothing is as far away as a minute ago."
(Jim Bishop)
Next, I glued it on to the face of the clock,
making sure to dry it
before attaching the hands and screwing the back on.

Be careful to check that you
screw the back on correctly!
The hanger has to be on the top where
#12 is!

Here's the finished clock.

Now, you might say, I can't draw.
That's all right-
you can make a collage,
you can put a photo,
you can cut out a picture from a magazine,
or you can print this out the size of your clock-

If you don't like the idea of making your own clock,
you can always get one from papemelroti!
This is designed by my brother Robert!

Make Your Own Christmas Ornaments

In preparation for the merriest of seasons, why not try your hand at making your own Christmas ornaments?

An easy Do-it-Yourself project made of materials you'll mostly find around the house!  Only 7 easy steps!

We've wanted to feature this craft project for quite some time now.  It's a good time to make these before the busy festivities pile up.

1. Gather the materials and tools you need:

Papers (cardstock, painted paper, book paper)
Silicone Sealant (buy this from your local hardware)
old credit card or something similar
Scissors
Pencil and paper to make the pattern
Crochet thread and needle
Stuffing (cotton or shredded paper)

2. Put silicone sealant on paper and spread thinly using the old credit card. Let dry overnight.

3. Make a pattern for your ornament. Simple shapes are best.

4. Cut out the shapes using your chosen papers coated with silicone.  Make sure you have 2 pieces of the same shape, back to back.

5. Start sewing the pieces of paper together with the crochet thread using any kind of embroidery, like running stitch or blanket stitch.
Before closing up the hole, stuff a little cotton or shredded paper.

stuffing

6. Put thread to hang it.

7. If you are making a mobile, you have to finish the individual pieces and then use crochet thread to hang them together.

FAMILY FOOD + FUN

In our family, we usually start our celebration with a prayer for each and every member of the family. Afterwards, we proceed to share our Christmas dinner while watching our favorite movie on hand. After a sumptuous dinner, we all go to the Christmas tree where we placed all gifts and start calling out the names on the gift tags.  After all the gifts are given, we all proceed to open the gifts given to each other while the camera/video camera records the festivities. - Paul Rubens Mendoza

Praying together as a family to on Christmas Eve to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. - Ria Ramos

'We always have a very intimate celebrations when it comes to christmas. we always celebrated the Noche Buena together as a family. For us, christmas is family time.  - Leslie Zuasula

Our family always attends church at midnight on Christmas Eve! Then we go home and all cook a delicious breakfast : ) - Chris H

Every Christmas Eve, our family stays awake to prepare the Noche Buena. Our mom heads the preparation, and we do our best to help her. At midnight, we gather together to open our gifts. Then, we enjoy the feast that we have prepared (with a bottle of wine). - John Paul Egalin Abellera

Every Christmas I love to prepare cookies with my family! Cinnamon flavoured, with lovely shapes like Christmas tree, snow flakes and reindeers! - Elisa

Every Christmas morning we open presents here and then we drive over to my mom and dads in our pjs where the whole family is usually waiting and open presents there. Then we have meat pie for lunch and its the same thing every year and it fabulous. - Maegan Morin

It has been our family's tradition to gather at our grandparents house during Christmas and New Year. We're doing this for as long as I can remember. Uncles, Aunts and cousins up to the 2nd degree gather to celebrate this festive season. We eat Noche Buena together. After that, we play parlor games and hold the much awaited exhanging of gifts. - Marinela Salamatin Diaz

I spent my past Christmas in our province in Quezon. My cousins and I had I lot of fun while preparing for the noche buena. I remember that we set the table in our grandfather's bahay kubo and ate the food in the batangueno way! Using a gasera as our table light even there is an electricity then, each of us placed one feet in our chairs with matching eating in our hands. That is so much fun! - Joan

GIFT-GIVING

We like to open Christmas Crackers, wear the paper hats, and all share the joke we find inside! - Leslie J. Richman

Wrapping gifts is my favorite! And then getting to watch your friend's faces as they rip it off and see what they've been given - Megan Henn

I like the idea of surprise advent boxes all tied along a string. A countdown til Christmas Day, filled with all your favourite things. I love this nativity set. It might be nice for kids, in each advent day box, having a piece to add to the nativity scene, anything from traditional wise men and cows, to more unexpected dinosaurs and tigers!  - Yasmine Amber

We always get new Christmas Pajamas every year - Madison Hendrix

Exchange gifts (bunutan) when our Nanay was still alive - Maria Carmencita Atienza

Christmas is one occasion that our family is always looking forward to. My grandmother would always tell us of the Christmas she she experienced as a child- before and after the war. She said she always received a doll from her two "ninangs" for christmas but when war came, the doll gifts stopped. When the war was over, she was already too old to receive dolls as gifts. So in 2005, i bought a couple of cheap plastic dolls and asked my grandmother to sew dresses for them. I then glued little gifts to these dolls and called them Maninay (hiligaynon word for Ninang). Then i asked my grandma to give each of them a name. She gave the names of her two Ninangs. Eufemia and Estrella, who gave her the happiest memories of christmas as a child. Grandma passed away in 2008 because of cancer but the two dolls we made are still used as a christmas decors at home during christmas. I plan to add a Brigida doll soon. :) Brigida is my grandma. - Kristoff Grabatski

DOING EVERYTHING TOGETHER

A fun and memorable activity that I haven't done for the holidays is to have a game that consists of certain names (anything you like to write) or things to act out written in paper and rolled out to be picked during the game proper and placed in a container. The holiday game is supposed to be like this - the container is passed around the participants while a short song is sung. When the song ends, the player whom the container stops at will pick a rolled paper from it and reads the words written on it wherein he/she must act out or blurt out what he thinks of the words written on it. The most creative and crazy answer or act will win points. The person with the most points wins a gift from papemelroti. - Vandro Casiwan

Every year my family and I would watch White Christmas together. Then I got married and my husband and I would. Now this year I can't wait to watch it with my son.  - Katie Tamblingson

I love that we always go out to eat on christmas eve and open gifts, and christmas day is all about making ham and seeing a movie in theaters - Lauren Becker

One person hides clues around the house so others can find one big present besides the other presents - Jacqueline Woolley

We wrap up 25 books and put them under the tree on December 1st, then unwrap one Christmas book each night to read together. :) - Lindsey Freitas

Every year, my family watches "The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe" at Christmas time. It's really an Easter story, but still, there wouldn't be Easter without Christmas. :) - Deb

Last year was one of the merriest Christmases I have celebrated. For the first time, I got to celebrate a White Christmas in China. It was a wonderful experience. We still had the usual Noche Buena with loved ones, and as an additional treat, we went out skiing (my first time, too) in one of their popular ski resorts. It was a Christmas full of firsts. - Norman Ray Villamayor

This year, instead of giving material gifts, I would like to make the Christmas season more meaningful for the family by encouraging everyone to do one act of service to a family member which he thinks will be most appreciated by the receiver.  :-)   - Jasmin Santiago Alejaga

We like to walk downtown Portland with all of the holiday lights to get us into the mood. - Rose

REACHING OUT

One of the most memorable Christmas is spending with our brothers and sisters who are differently able like people with hearing impairment, people who are mentally challenged, people with paraplegic. Archdiocese of Manila and Quezon City with the leadership of Rev Fr. Nonette & staff of AMOPDM will be holding early Christmas affair for PWD's. This is empowerment and letting them enjoy the day with free gifts, activities and at the same time creating awareness in the community. - Desiree Delrosario Demafelis

It could be fun if with my son and husband be able to visit our baryo for christmas and new year festive season and share gifts and blessings.  Kahit paulit ulit pipila mga kids (Even if the children lineup again and again) for their gifts but its so joyful & meaningful! - Veronica Daus

I was thinking of being a "surprise Santa" to a random person in need this Christmas.  - Joselyn Agres

Last 2 years ago, we spent our Christmas morning giving simple gifts to street children in our community. The feeling is really great. Then, in the evening we had a delicious Christmas dinner feast with the whole of our family. Including our pets. :)  - Cristina Dalina

I buy gift items in Divisoria/Binondo for the street children in our subdivision, wrapped the gifts between December 22 and 24, and distribute the gift items on Christmas Day. The gifts are usually toys, books, and candies and we give as much as 300 bags and all of which are given away.  - Jeffrey Yap

All the kids come in costume during the family Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve parties. - Faye Marco

TRAVEL

This holiday season, my med friends and I will go on a road trip. We've only been friends for 6 months but the bond we have can compare with those long time friends. We plan on making it a tradition starting this year! - Evangeline Go

I want to go to Policarpio Street this Christmas and take some pictures using an analog camera. - MJ Plaza

Last year, my brother in law who was working abroad, made a surprise homecoming, Christmas Day. Everyone was overjoyed because it has been years since our family spent the holidays with everyone present. We shared simple home-cooked meals over endless "kuwentuhan" (story-telling) of the past, the present and each sibling's future plans. We recalled adventures spent together on roadtrips and in an instant, decided that we take an adventure the morning after by trekking the family hometown's treasure, Taal Volcano! Reaching the top made everyone tired but the energy was high and even the kids appreciated being one with Mother Nature, which rarely happens when they're in the city holding their gadgets. It was one holiday adventure that everyone didn't miss and will surely be the start of the quest for more holiday adventures in the years to come! - Tin Marqueses

ECO CHRISTMAS

i recycle gift(wrapper)s! i would slowly unwrap a gift to preserve the wrapper and reuse them again. i have a large plastic bin of wrappers already and several boxes of ribbons. i love wrapping and unwrapping presents. i'm the official gift wrapper of the family. and it's somych fun especially since we usually give away either candies, chocolates, chichirya and trinkets instead of money to kids na namamasko (caroling). I would wrap all those trinkets as well as my mom's and sister's gifts for their pupils and sunday school kids and the prizes for the christmas party games. Thinking about it right now makes me want it to be December na! (November is for putting up decors). - Salmon Cat

The Christmas season is such a magical time and images of one's childhood mounting excitement at opening gifts comes to mind.  We often hear that Christmas is for children, so we wanted to give away something that evokes our youth and reminds us of our toys of long, long ago.

The products the fortunate winner will receive are originally designed by Papemelroti graphic designer Robert Alejandro.  When he isn't designing shopping malls, retail outlets, books or what-have-you, he designs for Papemelroti.  In designing these products, Robert took his inspiration from the Russian traditional wooden doll, the Matryoshka doll.

Here's what the first ever Matryoshka dolls looked like.  These were designed by a folk art painter Sergey Malyutin.

And another more recognizable style-
