The Easiest Way to Make a Journal

$
0
0

My journal is all filled up
and I decided to make my own
to avoid what happened here!

I folded some 8 1/2" x 11" kraft and white papers
in half.

Then I punched holes in the folded papers
with a two hole punch.

Here are the papers for my journal.

Next I looked for an old leather jacket.

After putting the pages through two rings,
I auditioned the pages on the leather I cut from the jacket.

I then sewed the rings on to the leather,
making sure to sew on both sides of the screws
so that the rings won't fall off.

I then found a long piece of leather from
the sleeve portion of the jacket.
I made two slits on the cover and inserted the strip of leather.

I then sewed some buttons to hold it all together.
I also used a glue gun to keep the strip in place.

I now have a journal to put my reflections in!
And it only took less than an hour to make!
If you want to see some of my drawings
and read my reflections,
come and visit me at HeARTworks.

Of course, if you don't have the time or inclination
to make a journal,
you can always drop by our stores
and find some really nice ones!

Venturing into Advent

$

For many of us, Christmas is a frenzied time of shopping, parties and gift giving.  Spending time in quiet reflection may be a luxury for some.  Here are some things even the busiest person can add to Advent to bring in more of the blessings of the season.

- Advent begins on the first Sunday Dec. 2, 2012 and it is a time of preparation for Christmas.  Before family meals, pray "Prepare our hearts to have more of you Lord".

- Sing Christmas carols in the car during traffic.  The ride will go much faster.

- Decorating your home with your family is a good time to share the meanings of each symbol.

  • The Christmas tree is evergreen symbolizing hope.  Being cut down and raised year after year, the tree reminds us of Christ's resurrection.
  • Ham is served at dinner to celebrate the triumph of good over evil.  The slaying of wild boars of olden times represented God's victory over sin, death and the enemy.
  • Bells are used to signify joy and celebration.  During Bible times, Jewish priests had bells on the hem of their clothing.(Exodus 28:31-35) Jesus' coming shows us that He is our High Priest who took upon Himself our sins so we can come close to God.
  • Candy canes have the shape of the Shepherd's staff.  These help us call to mind how Jesus is the Good Shepherd.
  • The Gingerbread Man was shaped and baked, just like we are created in God's image.
  • Christmas bows and ribbons signify the brotherhood of man bound together in peace through Christ's coming.
  • Snowmen under the heat of the sun represent icy, stony hearts that are melted by the knowledge of God's love.
  • Red and green colors surround us at Christmas time.  Red reminds us of Jesus' blood shed on the cross for love of us.  Green, on the other hand, the color of leaves, plants and grass represents life. Together the colors reflect God's life given up for us so that we may have eternal life.

- During travel, as you see the twinkling lights all around the metropolis, imagine yourself looking at the star guiding the magi to Christ.  Think of your destination as a place where you will meet God (in the people, place, situations that you will face).

- While wrapping your Christmas gifts, say a blessing or a prayer intention for the person receiving that gift.

- When preparing meals for parties and reunions, meditate through your actions.  While mixing different ingredients, think of how you can more peaceably walk with others.  While heating the food evenly, think of the attention you are giving your children (or younger friends), if all their needs are being met.

- For every concern that crosses your mind, replace it with a grateful thought.

- Allot one meal as the "thinning dessert" time.  Instead of having dessert that night, save the cost of the dessert and give it to someone needy.

- When in the grocery, grab some cookies or packed biscuits and store them in the car.  Spread some cheer to a beggar through these simple offerings.

- Every morning when thinking of what to wear and going through your clothes, take note of the those items you never get to wear. Put these in a nearby bag.  When the bag is full, donate to a nearby shelter.

- Cooking for the family?  Make a bigger batch for people who serve us every day - the street sweeper, police, security guards, etc.

What do you do during Christmas to make it more meaningful?

My Memorabilia Christmas Tree

My Christmas tree at home is a little scraggly
but I love it!
I call it my Memorabilia Tree
or my Scrapbook Tree.
There are lots of pictures hanging on it.
Every year I add more-
it's definitely not one of those shiny, sleek
and beautiful trees!

Here's one I made in about 15 minutes-
all you need is either paper or cloth,
cardboard, a glue gun, some ribbon and embellishments.

Cut out the paper into the shape you like.
This one is round, but you can have square,
oval, or even a Christmas tree or star.
If you want to use cloth, be sure to
use a mix of half and half white glue and water
to attach the cloth to paper so it's more stable.

After putting the picture in the frame,
glue a piece of cardboard to the back,
making sure to put a ribbon, twine
or string in between to hang your frame.

This fabric frame is one of my favorites.
I spent some time embellishing it
with embroidery stitches and fabric cut outs.

This is kid's play!
Cut out a tree shape and add dots!

A fancier version.
Let your kids help and let them
 decorate using sequins and beads.

This one is made using our papemelroti

Another one I made using Craft Cuts.
If your pictures are too precious to cut up,
like this one of my mom and my sister Peggy was,
just photocopy it.

And this one is made using Kitchen Clay.
See the recipe using baking soda and
cornstarch here.

The Master Plan

$
0
0

Many of Papemelroti's customers since the 70's will remember a plaque of ours that says "Plan ahead, it wasn't raining when Noah built his ark."

As 2013 kicks off, some of us may be making new year's resolutions and plans.  And some of us may be taking on a more free-spirited approach like actor John Cusack.  He once said "I'm not making any plans. I'm just going to let the universe surprise me.”

Is a plan simply a dream? a wish?  Well-loved book "Little Prince"s Author Antoine de Saint-Exupéry says, "A goal without a plan is just a wish.”

The word "plan" is both a noun and a verb.  Quoting from http://dictionary.reference.com it is:
- a scheme or method of acting, doing, proceeding, making, etc.,developed in advance: battle plans.
- a specific project or definite purpose: plans for the future.

Have you ever planned something and it never materialized?  Most of us have.
The late Dwight D. Eisenhower (then a 5-star general and now often ranked as the top 10 U.S. presidents) said "In preparing for battle I have always found that plans are useless, but planning is indispensable.”
Designing a home, building a business, preparing for retirement, all of these require proper planning.
In the book of life, the Bible, we will see that even God Himself had plans.
In him we were also chosen, having been predestined according to the plan of Him who works out everything in conformity with the purpose of his will (Ephesians 1:11)
But they do not know the thoughts of the Lord; they do not understand his plan, (Micah 4:12)
God even shares His plans with His people.  God said to Moses in Exodus 26 "Set up the tabernacle according to the plan shown you on the mountain."

What happens when we don't plan?
"By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail.” ― Benjamin Franklin
"If you don't know where you are going, you'll end up someplace else.” ― Yogi Berra

If you plan to do some planning this month, here are some things to consider using some scripture wisdom:

- Always plan good things for yourself and for others.  Do away with angry thoughts, getting even or vengeful plans.  Goodness begets goodness.  In Proverbs 14:22 it says "Do not those who plot evil go astray?  But those who plan what is good find love and faithfulness."

- Expect to work on these plans diligently in the coming year. "Good planning and hard work lead to prosperity, but hasty shortcuts lead to poverty." - Proverbs 21:5

- Sometimes we plan differently from God.  Like King David 1 Chronicles 28 "King David rose to his feet and said: “Listen to me, my brothers and my people. I had it in my heart to build a house as a place of rest for the ark of the covenant of the Lord, for the footstool of our God, and I made plans to build it. But God said to me, ‘You are not to build a house for my Name..."   Let us spend some time in quiet reflection and ask for God's help in all our plans.  He desires what is best for us.  If we listen with an open, sincere and willing heart, we will hear His voice guiding us.  "We can make our own plans, but the Lord gives the right answer. Proverbs 16:1

- God's ways are truly best for us.  He made us and He knows our purposes and plans.  We can count on the fact that the Master plan is the best plan for our lives.
- When we plan with God with us and within us, we can be assured that we can overcome any obstacles and challenges along the way for "There is no wisdom, no insight, no plan that can succeed against the Lord." Proverbs 21:30

Devise your strategy, but it will be thwarted;
propose your plan, but it will not stand,
for God is with us. (Isaiah 8:10)
- Remember that plans may not turn out as you expect them but sometimes these can be blessings in disguise.  If your plans get thwarted yet it brings a blessing, than it may be God's plan after all.  "Many are the plans in a man's heart, but it is the Lord's purpose that prevails." Proverbs 19:21
We can make our plans, but the LORD determines our steps. Prov 16:9

As you get a pen and pencil and map out your plans and strategies for 2013, hold on to God's promises for you.

"For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." (Jeremiah 29:11)

"Commit to the LORD whatever you do, and your plans will succeed." (Proverbs 16:3)

How I made my Fabric Journal Cover!

$
0
0

I started a new journal for the year
and wanted to make a fabric cover.
I cut up some cardboard
a little bigger than the pages inside
which were half the size of a short coupon bond.

Next I looked through my stash of cloth
and lace

and buttons and ribbons....
I keep a lot of these, just in case...

I audition the cloth and embellishments
to see how it looks.

Then I start doing embroidery-
cross stich, blanket stitch, etc.
Just doing what makes me happy.

I have to make the cloth big enough
to cover the front and back.

Next I folded the cloth in half,
with the front side facing each other.
Then I traced the cardboard cover on to the cloth
with pencil.
I then sewed it up on the wrong side
with running stitch, making sure that it won't be
a tight fit for the cardboard cover.

I then invert the cloth, insert the cardboard cover
and thin fiberfill stuffing.
I put holes in the cover using a fine pair of scissors.

Here is the finished product!

Coming up with new product designs every month is not a piece of cake but Papemelroti designer Meldy does it with ease.  What's her secret?

She is the "ME" in "PA-PE-MEL-RO-TI", meaning she comes third in the family of 5 siblings.  The acronym comes from the first syllable of the siblings' names in order of appearance - PA stands for Patsy, PE for Peggy, MEL for Meldy, RO for Robert and TI for Tina.  They are all designers for the family business.

Several articles and TV features on Papemelroti mention you as a fast worker, how do you do it?
I visualize what i want to make in my mind first so the actual comes easy.

What music do you listen to when you create your sculpture?
I like christian contemporary music,  dance music and the latest hit list.
Your products are very cute and whimsical, how do you conceptualize them?
Where do you get your inspiration?
My family, world and God's creation around me are my inspiration.  The Isabel Angel (figurine) was fashioned after my daughter who had ringlets when she was a baby.  the rest are my son, husband, nephew, niece, cats, dogs, etc.

What are your favorite products that you designed and why?
My favorite is usually the newest one i designed like my God is love angel.

How to Make Every Time Valentime

$

- Husbands and wives need to spend quality time together not just on valentines day but at least once a week.  The daily cares of life, paying the bills, doing chores, work, can take its toll on the marriage putting a strain on the relationship.  Time for undivided attention, talking on matters geared towards having the same mind, peppered with fun and laughter is essential in keeping the love alive.  Philippians 2:2 says, "complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind."

- One busy couple with 3 young children has the habit of saying "I do" every night before they retire for the night.  This is their way of saying "I commit myself to you today" despite what has passed that day.  They might have had a disagreement or misunderstanding that day but despite all that, they have not missed saying these 2 words to each other.  "Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you." Ephesians 4:31-32

- Amidst the rigors of corporate life and several trips abroad every year, one husband makes it a point to write his wife a love letter every month without miss.  He doesn't e-mail it but rather, he writes it on stationery, sometimes using different colored pens to express his love.  There is a special call to husbands to love their wives as Christ did the church.  He is called to give his very life for her.  To love is to do something out of the ordinary for the beloved and it's up to you to be creative in showing that great love!  Remember that age old adage "Expressing love increases love".  "Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her." - Ephesians 5:25

The bible is truly our guide for life.  It's the ultimate manual guide for life, complete with instructions for success in our daily living.  Let's study it!

A Pencil and a Dream Tutorial

$
0
0

My son is graduating from High School
and going off to college
along with so many other hopeful students.
Most of them have dreams
and are looking forward to the future!

Here is a simple gift to make and give
to a graduate-

All you need are pencils, bookpaper,
white glue, a cutter,
ribbons and a tag made of cardboard or cardstock.

First cut the bookpaper the same length as your pencil-
from the end of the eraser band to a little past the sharpened edge.
The width should be just enough to wrap around the pencil
with just a little extra to overlap.
Apply glue to the paper and wrap around the pencil,
making sure to remove the excess glue
by rolling the pencil back and forth.

 Dry the glue very well.
When the glue is dry,
use a cutter to sharpen the pencil.
Be sure to include parts of the bookpaper.
It's not going to be very neat,
but that's part of its charm!

Now  here is the fun part-
embellishing!

I  like to use recycled materials.
Here are bits of yarn from an old sweater
which I unravelled.
And a tag I cut from a old card.

I used different kinds of pencils-
see the different colored erasers!
And I found just the right quotation to write on the tag-
"A #2 pencil and a dream
can take you anywhere,"
by Joyce Meyer.

So whether you are a new graduate or not,
NEVER EVER give up on your dreams!

"For I know the plans I have for you,”
declares the Lord
“plans to prosper you and not to harm you,
plans to give you hope and a future."
Jeremiah 29:11

Holy Land Recollection: Eternity

$
0
0

It's just the time to think about ETERNITY.  If something is valuable, we need to prepare for it.  We celebrate Easter by preparing for it during the Lenten season.

As one of the faithful put it, "Lent is feeding the good in us and starving the bad, creating a transformation".  We all want to be better individuals and this season that comes only once in a year is one of the best times to be serious about it.

We want to talk about things that can help us during this season to make a change, and to make a change for a great eternity ahead.  We'll have some free resources you can use and a Holy Land photo reflection guide at the end.

Maybe you're one of those people who plan to really focus on these "religious matters" once you hit 50, or 60 and above (when the time to face God approaches more quickly, just kidding).  Well, think again, we never know when our last day on planet earth will be.  Each choice we make in the here and now has an eternal consequence.

Ok let's start now in building our friendship with God.  Where to start?  Never fear we're here to share with you what helps us make better choices every day.  Choices that bring more light instead of darkness into our lives.

Resources

Here's what we like using at Papemelroti, the Word Among Us.  You can subscribe to get the reflections mailed to your doorstep or you can read the day's meditations online here.   We also recommend Joel Osteen's Today's Word.  If you subscribe, these can be sent to your inbox everyday.

There are a lot of other free resources online to help you grow deeper in faith.

You can download free e-Books on the lives of saints at Catholic e-Book Project. We particularly like the story of Blessed Margaret Mary Alacoque  click here

One of the best loved devotionals is the centuries is Thomas Kempis' "Imitation of Christ" and it's downloadable here among other works.

Holy Land photo reflection guide

Journey with us in faith as we walk where Jesus walked.  You can do this meditation on Holy Week or at any time you wish to dedicate to God.

Instructions:

Read the caption prayerfully then click on the photos to reflect.  You may either right-click on the image to open the picture on another page or just press the X (upper right hand corner) on the picture box to return to this page.

Marah, Egypt
Read Exodus 15:22-27
As we travel to the Holy Land, we start from Marah, the place where the Israelites camped out after crossing the Red Sea.  Just three days from that miraculous escape from Pharoah's army, they are parched because Marah's water is bitter.  Moses cried out to God because of the people's grumbling and in response, God makes the water sweet.

Reflection:  As Christians, we, like the Israelites have crossed over the sea in our baptism.  Despite God's gift of salvation, we still have moments of grumbling.  Amidst our daily responsibilities, making a living and caring for others, we can forget the miracles we've experienced in the past.  Think about something you are very grateful for during this season of Lent.

Marah, Egypt

River Jordan
Read Matthew 3:13-17

From Egypt, we set a path for the River Jordan where Jesus was baptized by John.  The river is a frequent symbol for freedom because of the Exodus.  The waters are murky and uninviting.  We wonder why Jesus, who was the Son of God and sinless, needed the baptism of repentance.  John wondered too, asking "I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?"

Jesus said it was "to fulfill all righteousness".  As our Passover Lamb, Jesus Himself took upon Himself all our sin.  Jesus' sacrifice took our sins, as dark and as murky as the Jordan waters (or even darker) and made these whiter than snow.

Reflection:  What things in my life do I want to be free of?  What things bind me and stop me from taking on my true purpose in life?

River Jordan

Mountain of Temptation
Read Matthew 4:1-11

About 5 kilometers northwest from the old city of Jericho, we visit the place where Jesus was led into the desert by the Spirit, spending 40 days and nights fasting from food and drink.  The lonely, dry, rocky terrain doesn't hold much appeal but it is God's Spirit Himself that brings Jesus here.

Reflection:  We all know that trials and temptations have the capacity to make us stronger individuals but it's all easier said than done.  We can easily succumb and go for the easy way out.  Pick out the most difficult challenge you have now.  What growth do you see in yourself as you go through this?

Mountain of Temptation

Capernaum
Read Luke 4:31-41, Matthew 11:23

More than a hundred kilometers away, we reach a small fishing village called Capernaum.  This is where Jesus lived and taught.  Here, He healed many people like the paralytic, centurion's servant and Simon's mother-in-law.  Despite this, people were unresponsive to Jesus' teaching.

Reflection:  Our lives are filled with much undeserved grace.  God has provided for us, healed us, loved us and touched our lives in countless ways.  Spend a few moments in solitary silence without the TV, radio and other gadgets.  What fears prevent us from listening to Him and giving our all?

Capernaum Synagogue (where Jesus taught)

Sea of Galilee
Read John 6:16-24

Let's just take a few steps to the shore and get on the boat of faith to see up close the breathtaking beauty of the Sea of Galilee (aka Lake Tiberias).  It's not hard to imagine the sun setting whilst a strong wind blowing ruffles the waters.  Then you see a lone figure steadily walk towards you on the water.  Jesus says "It is I, don't be afraid!"

Reflection: Truly nothing is impossible with God.  He can turn panic into peace in an instant.  If we fix our gaze on Him, we can even walk on water.  What is the most impossible thing that you believe Jesus wants to do for you?

Sea of Galilee

Bethany
Read John 11:1-44, Mark 14:1-11

Less than two and a half kilometers from Jerusalem, we discover the home of Mary, Martha and Lazarus.  We are welcomed by the memory of Jesus' visits with these good friends of His.  This was where, through the story of Martha and Mary, we learned how precious our Lord finds our love and undivided attention.  It was also in this place where Jesus was anointed with fine expensive perfume from an alabaster jar, costing more than a year's wages.

Reflection:  Calculate what you earn in a year.  Add about 10%.  Would you be willing to give all of this up and give it to charity if you were sure God wanted you to?  It was not something that God asked of Mary but she did it willingly out of her love for the Lord.  We may not as of yet be as radical as Mary was but we can always desire to increase our fervor and zeal in our relationship with God.

Bethany

Gethsemane
Read Mark 14:32-52

At the foot of the Mount of Olives is the traditional location of the Garden of Gethsemane.  Picture Jesus praying here, surrounded by the olive trees (among the oldest known to science). The hour of His death was nearing and He was in deep anxiety.  Interestingly enough, Gethsemane means "oil press" and when millstones crush olives, the red liquid reminds us of Jesus' perspiring blood.

Reflection: The weight of our sins crushed Jesus' sacred heart.  He was so in love with us that He bore our suffering, sorrows and pains in this earthly life so much so that we can spend eternity with Him.  Despite our rebellious ways, He would go through all the agony all over again even if there was only one of us.

Gethsemane

Sacred Pit
Read John 18:19-24

Walking down the slope of Mt. Zion, we enter the high priest's Caiaphas' house.  The dungeon below the house is believed to be where Jesus was detained after His arrest.

During Bible times, a prisoner would oftentimes be tied with a rope across his upper body and lowered down into a pitch black cistern (now called the Sacred Pit).  With toes barely touching the ground, the prisoner would feel excruciating pain throughout the night.

Reflection: Dear Jesus, You who could vanish through the crowds, or summon an army of angels let Yourself be bound for us.  You endured a night of darkness to bring us light in whatever we are going through.  You were left totally alone without a soul to comfort you.  Recall the people God has called into your life.  God has constantly surrounded you with family, friends and even strangers to help you along the path of life.  Most of all, He has never left you.

Sacred Pit

Crown of Thorns
Read John 19:1-6

From Caiaphas' house, we wistfully walk towards Jerusalem's northeastern wall. We set upon the Via Dolorosa way and accompany Christ.

You see a crown of thorns on the ground and you gingerly pick it up.  Freshly twisted Rose bush vines are the prickliest.  You slowly put it on your head.  Without any pressure, it already gives you the feeling of tiny dangerous needles piercing you.  A headache may ensue, when thinking of how the Roman guards pressed the crown upon Jesus' head.

Reflection: What thoughts constantly plague your mind?  Do we allow painful memories and regrets of the past cloud our future?  Say a prayer that Jesus heal all of negative and hurtful thoughts. Through every thorn He has endured for our sake, He has already carried all of these burdens for us so much so that we need not carry these with us anymore.

Crown of Thorns

Golgotha
Read Mark 15:21-41

Our journey ends at the "place of the skull" where Jesus passes from death to life.  The place is so aptly described because its shape reminds one of a skullcap.  It is also the "Smokey Mountain" of Jerusalem, where everyone would dump their garbage.  It is mind-blowing that God, the creator of the universe, rich in all things except in having only one Son, allowed His only beloved Son to die on a trash heap.

Reflection: We know that the story does not end here.  We are an Easter people so we know that God's journey to the abyss of emptiness, nothingness and total despair was a victory because He defeated it.  Instead of us being on that cross, He took our place.  Let's ask the Lord to make us more worthy of His priceless, eternal gift to us.

He died for us, let's live for Him.

Creative Faith Journaling Workshop

$

Come to an afternoon of creativity and faith as we explore God's abundant promises for us!

What lies in our hearts? How do we pray for these?  This recollection will look at some of God’s basic promises and will explore how we might pray them. We will also learn to journal ... in words and pictures.

Journaling is said to have been practiced in Asia as early as 56 AD and while Westerns are said to have recorded only details and facts in their journals, the Asians have supposedly included images and other creative expressions in their journal entries even from early on.

Journaling is being used nowadays in many fields of discipline: creative writing, technical and scientific research, medical and nursing practice, in psychotherapy as a tool for self- discovery and emotional healing… Many use it to record their dreams, hopes, goals and accomplishments.

Holy men and women through the years have used journals to record their deep religious experiences.  This has helped them keep a record of their faith journey  and to discover and understand the work of God in their life.

The better to remember them and to rejoice in God’s answers.

Bring:

Journal - preferably spring or ring bound or sewn, (not perfect binding  because when you attach pictures and embellishment and notebook will be thick, pages may fall out)
pens
glue
scissors
magazines
optional- family pictures, pictures of yourself, paints, crayons, scrapbook materials, etc
& an open heart :)

Testimonial:

"I thought before that journaling wasn't "my thing".  I found it hard writing down what I hear from or what I want to say to the Lord.  Maybe, because I felt like they had to be done "nicely and properly" - with correct tenses, grammar and all.  But I realized that what was most important was that I remember our conversations together and feel renewed and strengthened by them.  Creative Journaling is the answer to my prayer!  I can draw, stamp around, make a collage out of whatever I heard God tell me.  I find it enjoyable and in a way "liberating" to do my journal now.  And looking through "all the art" makes it easier for me to recall His words and in a glance see my journey with Him throughout all these years!" - Dr. Marichu Pilapil

Legaspi People Development Consulting offered a half- day workshop on Creative Spiritual Journaling last November 15, 2008 at the Manresa Retreat House in Quezon City.  Mae Legaspi, the Managing Consultant of  Legaspi People Development  Consulting,  spoke about  Prayer as a Way to  One’s Authentic Self,  and  Patsy Paterno, Managing Director of Papemelroti,  shared her experience of journaling as a response in her dialogue with God.  She also demonstrated several creative techniques in making journal entries that express  what is in one’s heart.

*We want you to share in the mission of spreading the Good News so part of the proceeds will go to Christ’s Youth in Action, a campus based organization involved in sharing the Christian faith to college students.

*Please take note that this is different from the Faith and Art workshop (to be held in Tagaytay) still to come.

It's the Easter Season!  It's the perfect time to rejoice, celebrate and laugh!

"In heaven, the sound of Easter laughter resounds" - Catholic Register

According to Gelotology or the study of humor and laughter, laughing has a manifold of benefits.  Why laugh? Read on.
Studies like Fritz Strack's in 1988 and Robert Soussignan in 2002 conclude that the bigger the smile, the happier one gets, even if the person is just "faking it".  It showed that soon enough, respondents that kept on smiling, became genuinely happier.  If you can become happier just by smiling, how much more if you're laughing out loud.

Various researchers like Sondra Kornblatt's and Johns Hopkins University Medical School prove that if you laugh more often you'll have:
  • Higher level of happiness
  • Lower blood pressure
  • Better circulation and oxygenation
  • Healthier abs, lungs, facial, leg, and back muscles
  • Less stress
  • Stronger immune system
  • Better memory and learning skills
  • Improved alertness, creativity, and memory
  • Stronger bond with people you're laughing with
  • Energy boosts
  • Decrease in pain
  • Better problem solving skills
  • Better sense of humor
  • Greater level of emotional intelligence
  • Some relaxation
Can you think of some more benefits?

Make Your Own Bible or Journal Cover

$
0
0

If you use your bible often, write on your journal regularly or re-read favorite novels and such, then you're familiar with tattered, sometimes tea-stained covers.

This easy to do project is for you book-lovers and writers who'd want to get more mileage out of your journals and books by letting it "wear" a nice cover.

What you need:

pencil
ruler (I misplaced my ruler so I just used a binder thingy, the one in green)
box carton (or any other sturdy cardboard)
glue gun with sticks
cutter
cloth
scissors for the cardboard
cloth scissors
ribbons and buttons (optional)
*of course you'll need the book (I used my bible since I needed a cover for it)

Step 1: Lay the book down and using your ruler and pencil, mark about a half inch around the book.  So you'll have a big rectangle on your cardboard marking where you'll cut.  This will be your outer book cover.

Step 2: Cut away.

Step 3:  Score the parts where you'll need to fold it.  Do this by using your pencil and ruler to mark a line where you will use the cutter.  Very important - don't cut all the way down, just halfway since we don't want to cut the cardboard through and through.

*This project is so easy that I was able to do it without my ruler haha!

It should look like this when you fold it.

Try it out with your book!  Does it fit alright?

Step 4: Proceed to make the inner cover. Lay out the first cardboard piece you cut on another cardboard sheet.  Make a smaller piece by about 1/8 inch.  The size should not be smaller than your book and not be bigger than the first cardboard sheet you cut out.

When done it should look like this (above).

Now it's time to "clothe" our covers.

Step 5: Using your cloth scissors, cut cloth at least 1" larger on all 4 sides of each rectangle cardboard piece.  It's best to iron your cloth before cutting so it's smoother and more manageable.

Step 6: Glue gun the cloth onto the cardboard.  Remember to attach the cloth to the side that is plain as sometimes when you are using recycled cardboard with printing on one side, this might show under your cloth specially if it is a bit thin.

We love recycling here at Papemelroti.  We help reduce waste at local landfills in the process!  Recycling also saves money on buying new supplies.

Another thing to remember when covering the cardboard pieces with cloth is to keep folding it to check if it's not too tight.

Step 7: Cover both pieces with cloth.  Then check if the inner one is smaller.

Step. 8: Put the ribbon or garter inside before gluing both cardboard pieces together.  These will hold your book in place.  Take note that you should be able to take out the book any time and replace with another book since the garter is elastic and the ribbon can be untied.

At this point, you can already use your cover.  But if you want to do a bit more embellishment, you can add some cloth flowers.

Cut 4 equally sized squares about 3" x 3"

Cut the edges to curves to make a circle.

Glue gun the circles in ruffled form around in a circle formation and then attach a button on the center!

Tadah the finished product!
